Chapter 1.2 – Down the Crummy Hole

Upon her arrival, Melanie quickly noted the difference in inhabitants of Willow Creek’s library versus the one back home. For one, this library wasn’t over populated with hormonal and self-consumed teenagers running around to join their insignificant cliques and bask in frivolous conversations. No, this library was quiet and was home to developing scholars and young visionaries – both worlds of which Melanie considered herself a part of.

Job Search

Melanie looked around and took a vacant seat at a nearby computer. She cracked her knuckles and begin typing in the url addresses of several job search engines – none of which were producing any results. Melanie had just about given up when her eyes caught sight of the words “Star Publishing” – a company who’s advertisement stated an immediate need for a writer’s assistant. Melanie almost squealed with excitement, but quickly uploaded her resume to the server instead. She silently prayed that she would get a call back soon and sat back in her seat with a hopeful grin on her face.

The sound of thunder erupted from some lower part of her person and she stared down at her stomach. When was the last time she had eaten? That morning? Yesterday? Last week? She remembered seeing a small food spot near home back in Oasis Springs and figured since it was getting late, she would head back towards town. She didn’t know what kind of creepers lurked in the quiet, desolate corners of both Willow Creek or Oasis Springs, and she didn’t care to find out.

Safely back in Oasis Springs, Melanie spotted the RattleSnake Juice Bar immediately. She figured she had enough to splurge on a hamburger and fries for one night. She was beyond hungry.

She took a seat at the open bar at RattleSnake and waved over the bartender.

{Couldn’t find pic in snapshots. Grrrr}

“What can I get for ya?” There were no menus in sight so Melanie replied with a delicate, “Cheeseburger and fries?” It was more so a question than command on her part but the bartender seemed to have took it as a command and scuffed before turning around and procuring a bowl of plain chips from under the cabinets behind him.

“A bowl of stale chips coming right up,” he said and placed the bowl right in front of her, a lone chipping falling off the side. Melanie smiled gingerly, placed a few dollars on the counter and went to find an empty seat – which happened to be between two happily chatting individuals.

Cacklers

Melanie planted herself down and enjoyed the delicacy of her stale and very plain chips. When she was done, which felt like mere seconds later, she made to stand but bumped into the gentleman beside her, and spilled crumbs onto the floor and onto his shoes

“Sorry,” she said, keeping a firm grip on her bowl. “I didn’t know you were headed this way.”

Dude

“No problem,” he smiled, and kicked the crumbs from his shoes subtly. “We are not all mind readers.” He winked and flashed a gorgeous smile before sliding past her. He had only walked a few steps before turning back around. “Are you new here?”

Melanie shook her head yes before replying, “Yeah. First day here, actually.”

“I thought you seemed unfamiliar.” He held out a hand. “I’m Chase, and you are…”

Melanie sat the bowl down quickly and wiped her hands fiercely on the side of her shorts before extending her hand out to meet his. “Melanie.”

“That’s a beautiful name, Melanie. Fitting for such a beautiful woman.” Melanie, against her will, swooned at his words. He was handsome, yes, but also very smooth. So unlike the guys back home. “I don’t normally do this upon being sprinkled with crumbs,” he smiled, “but I would love to grab your number and possibly coffee whenever you’re free.”

Melanie’s eyes widened in surprise. Handsome, smooth, and very forward. She liked. She smiled back in return while taking his phone from him and punching in the 10 digits of her cell number.

Once the phone was back in his hands, he gave her a parting smile with an added, “Will see you soon,” before leaving the bar.

Daze

Moments after his departure, Melanie stood in a daze thinking about what their first date may seem like. She was in no rush to get married and start a family. Those thoughts were far from her mind, but it had been a long while since she had any gentleman friends to fawn over, and Chase was as good a candidate as any.

With hopeful thoughts of the future, and with a humming maniac sitting down on the couch behind her, Melanie thought her first day in Oasis Springs wasn’t bad at all. No, not bad at all.

One thought on “Chapter 1.2 – Down the Crummy Hole

  1. Yay, she got a job in her chosen field! Congratulations! It was funny when she heard thunder and it was coming from her stomach, ha. I am a little suspicious of Chase, he seems to be using a lot of flattery.
